When I was little, my mom used to tell me scary stories at bed time.
One particular story that really frightened me was a story of the house of laughing windows.
Many years later, I asked my mom how she came up with such a tale. She told me she was just repeating the plot of a movie that scared her as a teenager.
I looked it up and found the movie. I learned it was part of a huge specific genre that also included most movies by Dario Argento, a director I liked, and Lamberto Bava, the director of the famous tv series Fantaghiró that was popular with other Italian kids in the 90s. A childhood friend’s dad also starred in some of these movies.
I was hooked
Argento. Namely Suspiria. Which led to his work that is actually giallo. Though, I didn’t deep dive until a few years ago. Argento got me going but Sergio Martino kept me going. When I saw Your Vice Is a Locked Room…I just kept up seeing them one after another for some time.
