1st Adventure: Weak Plot Hooks?

Do you guys feel too that the plothooks for the characters to get to the mansion are a little boring? It seems essentially like the book is just assuming they'll go out there "because maybe gold, maybe evil."

It seems like these kinds of hooks don't give the party a compelling reason to go to the mansion other than "hey guys, here's where the story is so you should go to it" and then the players are like "well i guess we have to go here because adventure"

Can you guys think of a better reason or hook or motivation for the party going to the mansion?
