This may not be a popular post, but I find the CBS version of this series far superior. If you haven’t watched it yet, give it a try.
I find CBS’s main (alive) characters Sam and Jay to be funny and heartwarming. BBC’s Alison and Mike are rather dry and unfunny.
Sam and Jay are more developed characters, while we know little about Alison and Mike, other than them being broke and looking for a new home.
I love that Sam and Jay become very involved with the ghosts, and Jay has a great desire to know and interact with them, though he cannot.
Sam seems invested in the ghosts, trying to make them happy, while Alison acts as if they are annoyances. Mike seems entirely disinterested in them.
CBS’s ghosts are much more diverse and memorable, while most of BBC’s blend together as lame British aristocrats. There are too many of them, and they are too similar, to care about their individual personalities and histories.
I find each episode of the CBS series absolutely hilarious, while I am often bored watching its BBC counterpart.
The production quality of the American series is also far superior, and it’s actors are much nicer to look at. CBS feels young and progressive, while BBC feels old and stuffy.
Watch them both and decide for yourself.
