The moderators are being kind of "nice" about allowing
some conversations to continue, but these two points seem clear:
..1. Most of the Ghost in the Shell fanbase will watch
the film while being utterly underwhelmed due to one or more of these issues:
the fact that by making Ghost in the Shell into a gender-switched RoboCop reboot, minus the transhumanist philosophy and realistic visual style of the GitS anime, they've surgically removed the core of the story itself. The only thing left is a standard "hero" storyline that looks like a high-quality television episode directed by Rupert Sanders.
the whitewashing and cultural erasure of Kusanagi Motoko by changing her to "Mira Killian". At best, the move is tone-deaf considering the existing controversy over whitewashing in Hollywood. At worst, they blatantly changed the character from a Japanese woman to a white woman for the sake of greed. (Note: this is not an invitation to start arguing about whitewashing. Do not bring theories about Kusanagi's cyborg body or Masamune Shirow's "true intentions" in the comments. This is not the place for it.)
..2. Most non-fans don't know anything about Ghost in the Shell, and will see the film
as a pretty, yet generic sci-fi action film starring Scarlett Johannson. From the soundtrack
to the film direction, there's nothing original or unique about the film that has impressed any thus far.
If there was anything original about the live-action film (aside from pretty holograms and almost-nude-but-not-really ScarJo), the film's marketing team would have definitely been pushing it by now.
Discussions about whitewashing degenerate into diversionary screaming matches about "evil SJWs versus the world". We all know that the 2017 live-action GitS isn't going to be faithful to the Japanese anime or manga.
If we can't talk intelligently about the social issues surrounding the live-action film, what else is there to talk about? The trolls take over threads about whitewashing, and if you defend yourself, the moderators will "nicely" avoid controversy by deleting comments and locking threads.
I guess people can keep posting new trailers, and commenters will (rightly) keep bashing them as confirmation that the movie isn't what we want.
This subreddit seems to be quickly rolling downhill from here until the live-action film disappears from theatres. Not much left to say, then.
