For people who don't see Hollywood whitewashing as a problem, it seems like their comments mostly focus on one point.
Kusanagi isn't necessarily Japanese -- or her body could be any ethnicity.
This ignores the fact that everyone in Ghost in the Shell seems to be white. That, in turn, would mean that everyone was a cyborg, and that everyone inexplicably decided to transform into a white person by choosing a Caucasoid robot body.
I wrote a blog entry about this strange notion, and wanted to mention it here.
Does everyone in GITS have an android body?
If so, a live-action film would almost certainly not keep the anime convention of using white-looking characters, since Japanese people in Japan probably would want to appear Japanese.
If you could choose a new body, would you pick a completely different ethnicity? Is it likely that everyone in your country would choose to look like foreigners? Probably not (and especially not highly nationalistic groups like most people from Japan).
This is a completely practical reason why Asian people should be cast in a GITS film rather than blatantly non-Asian actors like Scarlett Johansson.
I've never heard anyone bring up this point, and it's unexpectedly obvious, so it seemed worth having a topic here.
