Named after Nechemya Cohen, the INS Cohen will be the largest ship in the Israeli Navy after a $500 million contract to deliver the ship according to the Navy's Mobile Sea Base concept was signed with General Dynamics NASSCO.
The Mobile Sea Base is a concept designed to be able to serve as a floating operations base for special forces, autonomous units and anti-piracy units such as Apache gunships or strike drones for years on end. Designed from the baseline USN's Expeditionary Mobile Base, the Mobile Sea Base has some major differences in being able to float-on, float-off its mission deck allowing for rapid deployment of UUVs and USVs, helicopter service tents on the flight deck allowing for deck storage of helicopters outside the hangar, and provisions for up to 20 Mobile Warfare Units to be deployed on the deck, helicopter hangar and aft of the superstructure at the same time, or 40 if flight operations aren't required, providing the base with air defense, striking power or additional sensors.
The INS Cohen will be delivered to the Israeli Navy by 2026, to enter service in 2027.
