November 2025
On 8 November 2025, the people of Myanmar went to the polls to participate in the third free and fair nationwide elections. The conclusion was more or less predictable: the National League for Democracy, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, was expected to maintain a healthy majority in both the upper and lower houses of the Assembly of the Union, owing to their status as the standard bearer of the democratic cause in Myanmar and the lack of any serious national opposition party (the military-aligned Union Solidarity and Development Party being viewed as toadies for the military--and rightly so). The real question was whether they would gain seats, lose seats, or sit around the same number of seats as before.
Once all the votes were counted--a process that took a little over a week, owing to slow reporting in heavily rural northern constituencies--the NLD would end up expanding their majority in both Houses by a small margin. The turnout, continually increasing since the 2015 General Election, clocked in at about 80 percent, making it the largest general election turnout in Myanmar's history.
Of course, the victory for the NLD is bittersweet, as always. Though they have maintained the faith of an overwhelming majority of Myanmar's population, their majority is still insufficient to pass constitutional amendments--and will remain so so long as the military continues to appoint 1/4th of the total legislators in both Houses.
