Kinshasa, June 16th of 2025.

Province by province, the peace conference had slowly glided its way through the Mai-Mai groups; initially, the CNPSC was not eager to participate; especially because of the fact that Tshisekedi was still part of the government, but the necessity for Mai-Mai groups was really shrinking exponentially as the DRC developed.

With that in mind, the CNPSC formally disbanded as a Mai-Mai entity, and formally registered, with a lot of support from Katumbi, as a political party; it kept the same name and the same leadership, although Katumbi formally requested an internal party election for its leadership, it maintained the same names, even though formal voting was done.

Now, Mai-Mai Kata Katanga was slightly more troublesome; a formal message from their former leader, Gédéon Kyungu Mutanga, who was now the leader of MIRA, or Movement of African Revolutionary Independentists, called for a formal accord between the Mai-Mai group and the government, who was ready to provide both amnesty and a guarantee of formal jobs for the combatants; the negotiation was fierce, and took a lot of back-and-forth due to the lack of trust between the two entities. A peace accord was finally drafted on June 20th where Mai-Mai Kata Katanga would dissolve, its leadership and members would be provided amnesty, and they would be ensured jobs, both in the national guard and in the CWP.

A small part of the Mai-Mai group formed its own political party, the “National Congolese Party for Freedom, Democracy and Autonomy” or the NCPFDA; Katumbi ensured that their rights would be respected and that they would be free to participate in the next election fairly, with appropriate representation from the media.

The remainder of the Mai-Mai were content with their government offers of disbanding themselves; and as such, they did, and the Katumbi administration was eager to help them, providing recommendations for the Congolese Workers Program, the National Guard and any other places where unskilled labor could be found.

Furthermore, with these new civilians receiving new identification and updated documents, the Katumbi administration will be revitalizing its outdated bureaucracy, little by little, by updating the status of previous civilians which was hard to find, such as Mai-Mai combatants.

The conferences were finally concluded on June 25th of 2025, and it was then that Moïse Katumbi decided to do a televised speech in honor of the end of a dark chapter in Congolese history, and the birth of a new one.

“Today, we finished drafting a historical agreement between the Mai-Mai and the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Once, the Mai-Mai were needed, as previous administrations were frankly, incapable of delivering a stable, corruption-free state bureaucracy, but as the DRC grows, so does our capacity to manage our state and today, the Congo has, finally, no need for the Mai-Mai. We respect these fighters, and their duties by protecting their villages, their families, their countrymen, against all odds; and I personally hope that these Mai-Mai are able to find their footing in civilian life as capable lawyers, doctors, engineers, dedicated members of society which can aid the Congo to prosper. Congratulations to all state officials which were participating along these few, chaotic weeks, in order to conclude peace in the Congo. Congratulations to all of us, for finishing this chapter of our history; the age of the Mai-Mai is, finally, over.”
