I heard a theory years ago that has stuck with me: that although The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is considered one of Genesis' greatest accomplishments as a group, it can also be interpreted as a blueprint for their then-upcoming split. Disc one can be seen as a "trial run" Gabriel solo album, with the safety of the band still backing him up, and disc two is the beginning of the band working in the absence of Gabriel, and finding their way without his narrative input. It doesn't line up perfectly and I'm sure it wasn't their intention, but it's an interesting take on the final release from the "classic" lineup.
