I lived in Louisville KY, until 4th grade ('73), I don't remember when when field day was, probably last day of school before summer? But it was the best day: races (3 legged, wheelbarrow, 50 yard dash), fun food sold in the hallways (icees and popcorn, etc), we had total freedom to compete or eat food, and just leave when we wanted, it was completely chaos. Between 4th and 5th, we moved to South Carolina, and they didn't do field day, never heard of it.
Did they do something similar where you grew up?
I'm pretty sure they still have field day at my old school....we had it in middle school, each grade would compete against each other, our middle school grades were 6,7,8.
