My Great Grandfather on my father's side fought in WW2. I know he was injured in France and sent home in 1944 however I was curious, would his military records tell me anymore than this? What exactly would I be able to find out about his service?

He was awarded a Purple Heart and my grand father has it but doesn't live nearby. I'm not the most knowledgeable on military history or medals, would there be anything inscribed on the medal (Like the division he served in or the dates of his service?)

I understand I may not be able to get his records due to a fire in the 70s but I was wondering if it would be worth the trouble to try
