Is it childish to enjoy the things we grew up with?

Post Body

Recently, someone told a friend that I am childish. I love geeky things, play video games, will watch old animated shows ( and new ones ), and generally enjoy collecting and enjoying the things I enjoyed from youth and younger years. Despite my initial dismissal, I've started to question whether or not they have a valid point.

I married in my late 30s and found my wife and I couldn't have kids, so maybe that's why? Is it actually childish to still enjoy these things, or is it perfectly normal for a 50 y/o man to still enjoy watching Voltron, and geek out a little when I find an Iron Giant collectible, or to enjoy reading books I enjoyed as a teenager?

Well aware that at this point, it doesn't really matter, but it does bother me that maybe that person is right. Maybe I am a bit too self-critical. I mean, the individual who made the comment married and started having kids right out of college - but I took the long scenic route in dating and having fun with my life before getting hitched. Didn't have my own kids, but helped others raise them..

Also - like many of you - I am completely screwed for retirement. I have diddely squat set aside... I didn't blow it all on collectibles either.

*** EDIT: Thank you to everyone, and I mean EVERYONE for chiming in. You guys really hit the nail on the head. Thank you so much, and for those of you who are gamers, LEGO-builders, Burning Man attendees, and who love STLD - Thank you for being awesome. GENX RULES! And if I see that lady and she makes a comment, I'm gonna tell her to kiss my shiny metal ass!

I'd say "childish" has taken on a sort of dysphemisim. So, "childlike" might be more appropriate in this context.

My answer is no. It's not childish at all to enjoy the things we grew up with. In fact, that's what nostalgia is all about. And, nostalgia is feel-good emotions.
