Did you listen to a local radio DJ as a kid / teen? What station was it and how important were they?
I just heard this Tom Petty song The Last DJ for the first time in a bunch of years and it had me thinking about this since it seems like most morning and drive-time/evening radio shows these days are homogenized junk simulcast around the country.
(sorry, live performance with long intro, but still cool)
Rick Chase - KMEL San Francisco. I got into radio because of him.
I had a mildly successful career from about 1993 to 2012, mostly working in Northern California.... KNCI, KWOD, KDND, KOSO, KATM, KRST, then went national at KLOVE/AIR 1 .
The Greaseman on 690 WAPE AM Jacksonville in the late 70s, early 80s before he said all the racist shit later in another market. Nobody knew what he looked like and all the kids said he he'd be on the air from a van driving around the city so the cops couldn't catch him. Kids are dumb.

Too funny.... I worked in radio for 20 years. I got my first on-air gig when I was 20... my on-air name? Kris Wylde.
