Do stall teams work?

I pulled a pride guard and devoted early on, and have been partnering them with my initial knight to play an armor game. Stall with the latter two until pride guard can get a few solid shots off. But after reaching the lava wyrm I feel like the team didn't stand a chance. Am I playing wrong?
