First attempt at gel nails, but what now?

This is my first attempt at doing gel nails. The edges are a bit messy and on some places the polish touched the cuticles. I hope practice makes perfect.. How do you remove gel nails? I read that you should file them and soak then in acetone. But I also read to not soak them and only filing them and then use a new layer.
