Collecting rocks for the garden?

I can't find an answer to this searching the web. Garden centers sell rocks, slate etc and it's quite pricey. It's quite abundant in the hills near me, but aside from pocketing the occasional interesting stone I've never thought of taking larger rocks home for my garden. I should say I'm not about to fill my boot with lots of rocks!
I recall it's illegal to take stuff off beaches, but what about hills? What's the legality of doing this?
