Apologies in advance for the gushing:
I really liked ABZU, but its music has stuck with me way longer than the game experience has. I know the composer, Austin Wintory got a Grammy nomination (!) for his previous work on Journey (another favorite), but I never hear anything about his music for Abzu.
It's (in my opinion) incredibly complex, sophisticated orchestral and vocal scoring. It feels like it's on a whole other level than any other symphonic music I've encountered in games. There are so many interesting rhythms and textures. Maybe it's just my crazy opinion, but I feel the urge to share it with everyone, just in case they've never been exposed to it :)
Some favorite examples:
Delphinus Delphis - The thing I love about this track is how it teases one of the main themes through this whole piece (at 1:13, and 2:38, but never quite completes that last bar). Then when it finally builds and releases that last bar with that gahddamn drum and those vocals coming in...holy shit not many songs give me goosebumps so consistently.
To Know, Water - The main theme. Harps and (I think) hang drums beautifully evoking water. Layered, harmonized vocals coming to a crescendo with deep bass cello tones out of nowhere.
Then Were Created Gods in the Midst of Heaven - A capella vocal piece. Insanely complex harmonies, constantly intertwining. It blows me away. The last 40 seconds is honestly one of most moving pieces of music I've encountered.
It just kind of hit me recently when listening to this soundtrack again how far game music has come. If anyone else wants to share any game music they feel is underappreciated (or if you just want to nerd out about any other game music), please do! Don't leave me nerdin' here alone mannnnn.
