I don't know if anyone here has seen the letter sent by the FBI to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, demanding he kill himself.
Myself, I only read it today. When I saw it, the first thing that struck me was how similar the language and tactics employed are similar to those of GG.
The scouring of one's past. The digging up of every single action that might be construed as "wrong" or "evil". Even the focus on one's sexual history and private life. And, obviously, the demand of suicide as "repayment" for such crimes (which extends far beyond GG and into chan-style trolling in general).
GG likes to compare itself to the civil rights movements of days past, as evidenced by their many image macros comparing themselves to MLK and other leaders.
What they forget, though, is that the civil rights leaders of times past are not the peaceful, power-structure-respecting, sanitized versions of them we learn about. No, in his time MLK was seen as a menace, a madman, someone out to destroy the very pillars upon which society supposedly stood upon. (there's actually a really cool hashtag going around on twitter regarding this: "#ReclaimMLK")
Same thing with the sufragettes. One need only look at anti-sufragette propaganda to see that they were not seen very differently from how straw "radical feminists" are viewed today. The reason GG can now call them "real feminists"? Because they won. They aren't maligned anymore because they won and there would be no point to it.
If GGers were alive during MLK's time, or the sufragette's, I'm sure of one thing.
They wouldn't be on their side.
