GamerGate's latest "Arbitration Request" is 15,000 words and climbing. That's about 60 typed, double-spaced pages. That's not counting the dozens (hundreds?) of hyperlinks you have to read to digest it.
It owes its size to 8chan canvasing for "meatpuppets" to target specific editors.
DIG UP ALL INFO POSSIBLE ON Ryulong, NorthBySouthBarnoff, TarainDC, and TheRedPenofDoom.
SCOUR TWITTER, TUMBLR, WORDPRESS, ANYTHING FOR RYULONG, TARAINDC, THEREDPENOFDOOM, OR NORTHBYHEADUPASS
Their users dutifully dredged up countless old, investigated and already settled accusations, and material not appropriate for Arbitration.
It's 8chan so they also connected those editors to real life names, twitter accounts, patreon accounts, and email addresses. 8chan:
Who is [First and last name, redacted] on wikipedia?
Ryufag. I think. Maybe dreadfag or whatever. Their names are shit.
More [Last name, redacted] & LW Twitter buddying
Archived! [Last name] supports LW on Patreon
I'm trying to decypher that string now. I want to see if he's a sex offender.
When this all spread to KotakuInAction I sent reddit admins a PM in case the personal info dumps offended them; it is still up though.
Likewise, the Arbitration Request leverages their army to Gish Gallup. Indeed the request does not make any specific complaints:
a simple review of the linked discussions above should illustrate what conduct issues are in question here with regards to you and other parties to this request. Laying out all of them personally would be taxing
True, it is taxing to review. Each time GG pulls this stunt, its targets expend massive effort debunking them. Example, read starting at
Yeah TDA, sure, if it's too taxing for you, I'll do it. [...]
and see that GG hasn't won a single of these requests yet, instead often gets themselves banned ("BOOMERANG") because the requests are so abusive. But GG is very fond of referencing its numerous failed attempts as evidence that its targets are always in trouble.
what is it the 4th ANI you got this month? Can any admin tell me with a straight face that his behaviour is acceptable?
Wiki admins are understandably frustrated (my emphasis):
a lot of people have already commented ... to avoid making this page an unreadable wall of text, I'm asking everyone to please stick to the rules and be careful not to use more than 500 words in their statements. If you have used more, please shorten your statement in a reasonable amount of time, or it will have to be removed in its entirety.
A main Gator has a comment over 2,000 words. Yikes.
One serious problem is that "Arbitration" (which is a high-level conflict resolution tool) is "not ripe."
The previous request was dismissed as "too soon" to to see if the existing community processes could handle the situation. I am not aware that there has been any attempt to utilize the existing community processes since that time
The last ArbCom request closed less than a week ago, and all of the discussions linked to above are from September and October, before the request closed. As far as I am aware there have been no significant events on the GamerGate article
GG is trying to bypass Wikipedia's rules and processes to escalate. It seems admins might grant the request (so far 0 in favor/opposed) to try to stem the drama, but they don't want to reward the escalation.
... might seem to point to the fact that the community cannot successfully deal with this dispute and that it would probably be a good idea for ArbCom to step in. At the same time, I don't want to give the impression that by failing to drop a stick, someone can force us to take a case ...
But perhaps the main takeaway? This is a typical day in a 3-month ordeal on Wikipedia. It must be exhausting, which GG must know, and they're going out of their way to make it harder by not respecting any rules.
