Skylanders Question? Please help a mom out….

My son keeps begging me for Skylanders. I do not know much about games or gaming systems and when I looked online it’s $150 for the game,portal of power and some characters. Now he wants the giant characters but he has a PS4 and I don’t see them as an option for PS4 because they only have the imaginatior game. My question is- if I find some Skylander Giants that came out with the PS3 game can they be used on the power of portal with a PS4 game?
