Are memory card issues common with the Xeno chip?

Had a friend of mine install the xeno chip on to an orange spice gamecube I got imported from Japan and it is having problems reading my english memory card. I tried running Melee on it and the disc ran fine but thinks the memory card is corrupted despite it working fine on my Wii. First party memory card and legit copy of melee too. Is this a common issue and is there a fix? Thanks!
