Technology (I’m stupid)

So I played almost 1/3rd of a game and was wondering why I only could choose from two technologies and wondered when I could finally get other ships…… not seeing the whole line of other techs I could research on the right.
I’m an old school GalCiv / MoO player. I still make mistakes, I guess.
Good news is that all I was going after was mineral wealth and the techs kept coming. I am now seeing if I can catch up since I can produce a ton!
