Premise: In the future, humanity has lost much of the spark that it had in past times. So who better to rekindle things than perhaps the greatest legend in rock and roll history?
It had been a long trip. Three thousand light years, give or take a few parsecs. And then there was the time travel aspect. That’s pretty important. And risky. You can really mess things up through time travel, which is why it was illegal, except under special circumstances.
But for him? Well, the government of a civilization spanning over three thousand planets decided it was worth the risk. Or maybe they were just sentimental for a time long past, and a man long dead.
Or was he?
Actually, he was in the medical bay right now. I was watching him via holofeed. He’d come along with me easily enough. Despite the fame and the fortune, Earth held little interest for him anymore. People at the time were less obsessed with him and his music. He’d divorced the woman he loved years ago. His health had declined, due in no small part to the unhealthy food he loved and the drugs he abused. But for the 1970s, as they were referred to at the time, that was par for the course for a musician.
Its work complete, the pod opened up. Just a few hours ago, it had contained a clone of him that we could leave behind in the hotel room. Now, it held a regenerated version of him that was young and in his prime, as he had been during his movies, his military career, and his many early concerts. He was quite the handsome figure. As a historian and also as a fan myself, I felt a little giddy being in the same spaceship with him. That was part of why I had been selected for this very important task.
Back on Earth, they were searching for his body right now. Or at least what they thought was his body. But it wasn’t him.
Elvis had left the building.
When I heard about the GWN3k event, my first thought was the (imho) underrated movie "3000 Miles to Graceland", which had a ton of Elvis references in it. Being me, I started thinking scifi, and turned that into 3000 Light Years to Graceland. Then the story kind of wrote itself from there.
I'm pretty certain this isn't the first time travel story about Elvis. I seem to recall a Twilight Zone episode (80s version) involving him. This story also has some elements seen elsewhere in scifi, like from the book/movie Millenium and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
This is also a heavily romanticized version of Elvis, but he was always a larger-than-life character... even in death.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy.
