I caught my friend just as he was opening the door to his hotel room. The hotel room his internet girlfriend had told him to get for after their date downstairs in the hotel’s expensive restaurant.
He had taken the elevator, so had the advantage on me. But he was moving slow, a lot of the energy taken out of him. I, on the other hand, had dashed up several flights of stairs and was full of… well, there were a lot of other things going on. It didn’t hurt that I was a tomboy either. A couple of flights of stairs were nothing to me.
I caught his attention before he could go inside. He looked towards me as I hurried towards him, the door to the stairs slowly closing behind me.
Of course, he asked me what I was doing there. I told the truth, but just not all of it. I apologized and told him that I wanted to see how things played out on his date tonight. So, I had followed him to the hotel, then snuck in behind and sat a discrete distance away. Then I waited to see what happened.
He gave a sad laugh and told me that it must have been a boring night then, because nothing happened. She never showed up. He had ordered a drink or two while he waited but didn’t want to be drunk when he was sure she was going to show up. He’d tried to text her, but no luck. He’d ordered just an appetizer then while he waited, barely picking at that before finally realizing he had been stood up.
I had seen the amount of cash he left on the table for the server. He was always a generous guy to begin with, and it wasn’t their fault he didn’t order much food and took up the table far too long. That was some evil bitch’s fault.
I told him that we should talk about tonight. He didn’t look to be in the mood for talking, but as he opened up his mouth to say something, I just pushed my way past him into the room. It was a nice room, in a nice hotel. I told myself that waste of humanity that stood him up… that catfished him… she should feel awful about this.
I went to the minifridge and got us both two beers. He had shut the door, shaking his head. I resisted the urge to toss it at him like I normally would. He may have done something dumb like just let it hit him so he could feel anything right now. So, I waved him over and had him sit on the bed beside me.
I’d had a few drinks myself while watching him, although I’d been seated at the bar. That’s when I realized how expensive the place was. I wasn't more than a little buzzed after all of this time though, just like him. One more beer wasn’t going to change that all that much. Although in his current mood, maybe he’d decide to go through all of those little bottles of liquor in the fridge. Those could do some damage, both physically and financially. I was afraid to think of how much just these two beers were costing, but he needed it and so did I.
I waited to see if he wanted to start the conversation. I was hoping he would. But he didn’t seem to be in the mood to do more than stare down at his beer.
Finally, I sighed, and started off by saying “So, about your girlfriend…”
Here's another narrative that was originally a story that wasn't going anywhere as full as a script. I had gotten about half way into it and lost traction long ago. But I was able to start fresh today and write is as a narrative. I'm still struggling with how to incorporate dialogue into narrative and have it not be confusing. I think the male character says nothing, while it's a mixture of dialogue and narrative from the tomboy.
Please feel free to modify this if you want to record this. This is me writing it in one guy, then doing a quick editing pass on it, and then posting it before I start second-guessing its merits as a story.
Comments are always welcome, but I'd ask that you don't tag others in them. I'd love for this to be recorded, but it needs to be some performer's only discovery of the script, and their decision to record it without influence.
Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy the story and my little notes here.
