Post Body

The warrior who had journeyed with us for over a year now laid on the ground as I cradled his head in my lap. He was dying, and I was desperately trying to think what to do about it.

It was supposed to be an easy quest. The temple was supposed to be abandoned, and we were supposed to recover some artifact from it. We should have questioned why they were paying so much for our services if it was so easy, but we needed the money.

Of course, it turned out to be anything but easy. It was a deathtrap. There were literal traps, and monsters, and worshipers of the dark god the temple had been built for in ancient times. By all rights, we should all be dead. But somehow we kept going, and finally defeated the dark god’s avatar itself and took the artifact. But not without a heavy price.

I looked again at the cleric. She shook her head. Her healing spells were long used up, and her prayers to her own god for direct intervention were not being answered. Maybe it was this foul place keeping her god from hearing her. Or maybe, in the end, her god wasn’t much better than the one this temple was built for.

The rogue had been searching through this room and the surrounding areas of the temple, trying to find anything that could be a healing potion or something to help our dying friend. I didn’t think they were going to find anything, though. This was not the place for those that embraced healing magic.

“I’m sorry,” I said, looking down at his bloodied face. I could wield such powerful magics, but I felt so powerless now.

He laughed weakly, a little bit of blood trickling out of the corner of his mouth that I wiped away with a bit of cloth. “I have no regrets,” he said. Then he mustered an impish smile. “Except when I embarrassed both of us by implying I’d like to be more than friends.” He looked wistful. “When I said I loved you.”

This script uses a plot element that has been around for centuries, and that I've seen variations of multiple times in different forms of media. Hopefully this is different from what anyone else has done, as I'd hate to be involuntarily plagiarizing someone's specific take on it. And hopefully people enjoy the story.

Please do not tag any content makers in the comments. If they are meant to record this, they will find it on their own and make their own call.
