I knocked on my friendâs apartment door. He had given me a key to the place for emergencies, and he always said to just let myself in. Except I always knocked. And I kept telling him to put the chain on his door when he was home anyway.
He answered the door, and sure enough, he hadnât used the chain. Didnât he know the kind of world we lived in? He told me to wait a second while he grabbed his wallet and keys. I told him to wait a minute. We didnât need to go out right away.
He looked surprised. I was the one who had established the entire Friday ritual of going out to our favorite bar. He didnât really have much of a social life before we became friends. And I didnât like to hang out with the people I worked with.
He gestured towards the inside of the apartment, so I came in, shutting and locking the door behind me and drawing the chain. He just kind of rolled his eyes, because I was always getting on his case about that. Then he sat down on the couch, and I sat in the big, comfy chair set at a right angle to it. But I was sitting on the edge of it.
There was no easy way to say this. I had run it through my head how to play this, but the truth seemed the best way, even if that was breaking some rules.
âLook,â I said. âI need you to know that if we go out tonight, thereâs an extremely high chance that some strange girl is going to hit on you, and want to go home with you.â
He looked intrigued, especially because he never saw himself as the type to have strange girls try to flirt with him, let alone go home with him. âWho?â
I shrugged. âIt could be any number of women. More than likely very beautiful. And if you bring them home, thereâs definitely a chance theyâll have sex with you.â
He looked curious. âIâm not seeing a downside here.â
I shook my head gently. âIf it was just that, I wouldnât have said anything. The problem is, if they donât sleep with you, theyâll kill you.â
This is loosely based on shows like John Wick, Hotel Artemis, and others where there are secret or not so secret groups of assassins operating not necessarily all that well-hidden and largely doing what they want as long as they respect the rules. It basically wrote itself as I was watching the first two John Wick movies on cable the other day, and certain parts of it just kind of happened versus being planned from the start. Hopefully people enjoy this.
I also feel lazy for calling their society the "Black Widows" except that it fits pretty well. Although I did briefly try to find an alternative, everything else didn't feel right and I didn't want to overthink it too much.
