We dropped my little sister off at college, then came home.
Technically, she was my daughter. I had emancipated myself from my parents when I was seventeen and been on my own. Then at eighteen I had fought for control of my sister, and they had basically caved without much effort. She’d basically been staying with me as soon as I had my own apartment. Then I adopted her because it made things easier. So my sister is legally my daughter too.
Actually, we adopted her. My best friend and I, that is. After we got married.
It was a total sham. Not the adoption. That was very real. But in order to get the adoption, I needed to prove I had a stable household. I thought I had my act together okay, but you know what? My best friend did even more. He’d started working for his parents right after high school and had a good paying job with the family business. It’s not like he only got the job because he was their kid. He’d worked there summers for a couple of years and done a great job, and this was just a natural transition. In his free time, he took online courses to get the piece of paper that said he was qualified to do the job he was already doing quite well.
The marriage idea started as a joke between the two of us before it started to make more and more sense. He and I would get quote unquote married to make my financial situation look better. The courts look more favorably on two parents than one. Plus he had better healthcare than I did. Once we adopted my sister, she was covered, too, which was important for a few lingering health issues she had that my parents hadn’t cared about.
It was all out of convenience and all for show, although we fooled the courts I guess. I guess we fooled some of our friends and family, too. He really sold the lie, even coming to the parent-teacher conferences for my sister or helping me with her medical appointments. My sister was in on the lie, but she liked him. She said she finally had a mother and father she could look up to. I think when she said that it made him cry a little. I wasn’t sure, because there was something in my eye right about then, too.
I'm not sure where the idea for this came from, although I think it turned out fairly decent. It's a very complicated family dynamic, but that doesn't matter because it's still a family. I guess that's the main theme I try to dwell on in the story, about family being complex yet you just know it when you've found one, if you didn't happen to be born into something that met the requirements.
I went light on the lewdness on this one, with just a few lines to mention it somewhat vaguely, as it wasn't the focus of the story. Hopefully people don't mind that, or at least like the story a little.
