I skimmed through his file on my datapad again. He was a smuggler, well-known to be running weapons for the Resistance. That by itself was enough for the death penalty under Protectorate law. His ship had run afoul of an EMP mine that the Protectorate had taken to planting along known smuggler exospace access points. Our battlecruiser had been in the area, and picked up the mine’s message that it had caught something. We arrived before the ship could recover, and boarded the freighter and took both it and him without a fight.
As I was going over his rich criminal history, the execution order came across. Not even a trial, huh? Not that I was terribly surprised. Trials seemed to be largely formalities these days. They just wanted him dead as soon as possible. And as the chief security officer on this ship, carrying out that order fell to me.
I’d had to execute a criminal or two before. Well, just the one. I guess I’d been involved in the deaths of many others through battles, or just being a Peacekeeper in general. I didn’t like killing people, although the one I had to kill personally most definitely deserved it. I’d seen them kill innocents with my own eyes. This would be no different.
Then why did it feel like it was so different?
This is a semi-spontaneous rewrite I did of a script I wrote several years ago. That was a more traditional script, while this is more a narrative or story. This is also a lot less lewd than I remember that one being, but I feel like it works for this. Hopefully people enjoy it.
