The orb floating over the altar was a brighter red than I had ever seen it. As a child I remembered it just dimly growing red. But this morning, on the day when the world was supposed to end, it was almost as bright red as it could get. We were going to fix that. Well, my brother and my friend were. The results should start showing almost immediately once they began the joining.

There was an awkward silence. Only adults were allowed at the ceremony, and they tended to marry early. Or of course others were just healthy young people having sex just like they did in the outside world.

No one was saying anything. So I had to.

“I’m still a virgin,” I said weakly.
