It was a relief when my friend agreed to go house hunting with me. With my career where it was, it seemed like a good time for an independent tomboy like myself to find a nice place to live versus just staying in an apartment.
We rode our bikes away from town a bit. The farther you go, the better houses you tend to find. The good ones near town were all snatched up long ago, but I didn’t mind having to come out this far. It was time with my best friend, after all. We’d known each other since we were kids when the place was a lot smaller, then grew up together. We ended up working together and then living in the same apartment complex near work. That may sound like a coincidence to you, but as I said, it was kind of a small place. But it was growing fast, and most people ended up working there anyway, or living nearby until they found their own place.
We’d driven past a good number of available houses to get to this point. But they all either looked too small or too new. Other ones just weren’t my style, while some of them seriously seemed to have something wrong with them. I had time to look though, and there were a lot of houses to choose from.
Then I saw it. It was coming up straight ahead. It looked like it had been around a few years, but the style was solid. It looked like it was at least three bedrooms, although I’d have to get inside to be sure. There’s always room to expand with the right house, too.
I slowed down my bike, my friend doing so as well. I nodded over at the house I had been looking at. “That one,” I said.
He looked at the house I had been staring at, although it was still a ways off. “Looks like a good choice. Just tell me what you want me to do.”
I looked at the land around the house. Then I pointed west. “You go around that way and drive the house over to me.” I grabbed his arm before he could speed off. “But let me take the shot...”
The phrase "house hunting" set off an idea in my head a while back, and as usual, I took something normal and turned it weird. This is the result. A lot of it is standard Homer "tomboy friends to lovers" stuff. But hopefully it's told in a different enough way to make it interesting.
