CW: This script makes reference to a troubled marriage. It’s very minor in my opinion, but if that bothers you at all, you may want to skip this.
If I’d had the inspiration for this script earlier, I would’ve absolutely posted it on Groundhog Day. It shares a premise with the movie of the same name, where the main character is stuck in a time loop that nobody else recognizes, but that’s kind of where the similarities end. It actually started out as a more lighthearted script, based on a dumb/clever/lazy title, but the more I wrote, the more I started to see opportunities for a serious romantic storyline.
I’ve written shorter romantic pieces before, but this seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore a longer one, with bittersweet undertones mixed in with hope. And I don’t have to tell this audience how well the first person narrative format lends itself to sharing inner monologue, and telling a tight story.
Special thanks to my beta reader! I rarely have other eyes on my scripts before I post them, but their input was invaluable for pointing out phrases that could've been worded more clearly. And who doesn’t appreciate supportive feedback?
Synopsis for performer:
Your character has an analytical side, and an emotional side. When they are in harmony, she’s happy. The implication is that she’s been out of balance for a while. The troubles with her marriage are up to interpretation, but it’s nothing that would lead to imminent divorce, and no individual bears particular blame for the situation. The whole time loop is left open-ended on purpose. It’s not about why it’s happening, it’s about how she chooses to deal with the situation.
Synopsis for listener:
A woman unexpectedly finds herself stuck in a mysterious time loop, where she has to repeat the events of a day nearly ten years in her past. It happens to be the night that she first made love to her future husband…a relationship that’s seen its share of troubles lately.
We make out for what feels like hours, the soft wool of my sweater tickling his bare chest as his hands roam all over my body. I shiver as he reaches underneath to trace his fingertips up and down my spine, and I press my breasts firmly into him in response. My skirt has ridden up enough that he has no problem finding my barely-covered ass cheeks to give them a lusty squeeze and a loving caress. The frantic kissing of the elevator transitions to a more…leisurely pace.
Not that we aren’t making out passionately – he has a breathtaking energy that instantly makes my heart race – but we both sense that we can take our time now. This night will be a marathon, not a sprint, and I want us to cross the finish line together. Luckily, I know how to really turn him on.
Sometimes I feel guilty, because I know things about him that I wouldn’t have known at this point in our relationship. Like I have insider information, or a cheat code. And sometimes I feel envious, because he gets to enjoy our first time over and over again, ignorant that we’re all trapped in this damned time loop. And then I wonder if I’m blessed or cursed, to re-live this moment in my life. But there’s no room for those depressing thoughts right now.
