Whenever I post a script, I first read it from the point of view of a voice artist. eg. Is there too much direction? Not enough direction? Are the lines easy to speak? Is it more trouble than it's worth recording and editing something like this? The answer to these differs depending on the VA's skills, available time, etc.
But one thing I've been thinking about a lot is the inclusion of SFX, ambient noise, or even a musical soundtrack. It can be a useful storytelling tool. Not just with immersion, but it can replace a lot of exposition-like dialogue - a pet peeve of mine. If I can "show" instead of tell, I do it evey time.
I appreciate a lot of voice artists don't have the time, software, or know-how to source and edit SFX which is why I always include a note in the script offering my services as an editor.
But it has me wondering if my aim has been off when it comes to writing these scripts and it has me wondering a couple questions:
As a V.A., do you lose interest when you see SFX in a script - even optional ones?
If, when posting a script offer, I could put together a linked .zip file of the SFX required for the project. It would cut out the sound-soucing all together for the V.A. Would that make the project more palatable?
Any other insight is welcome.
