Hello all, and welcome to October! This month, we're celebrating LGBTQ History Month, Filipino History Month, Indigenous Peoples Day on Oct 10th, and National Coming Out Day on Oct 11th!
LGBTQ History Month showcases and acknowledges the sacrifice and bravery of our predecessors in fighting for our civil rights as queer people. We as a broad and varied demographic have influenced and shaped the world in such an incredible way from activists like Marsha P. Johnson to artists like Hayley Kiyoko, and so many more!
Filipino History Month commemorates the first arrival of Filipinos in North America and their subsequent impact on it's growth and culture! This celebration focuses on the historical events and ongoing milestones set by Filipino-Americans.
Indigenous People's Day celebrates the culture, history, and impact of Native communities worldwide. It was started in 1992 as a protest against the colonial nature of certain North American holidays with the intention to spread awareness the injustices committed against indigenous peoples.
National Coming Out Day is an ongoing observation of the inherent courage behind 'coming out of the closet'. Its roots lay in 1988 as a feminist movement to recognize the importance of living the truth of one's own identity in a safe and supportive environment!
That's all for now! Feel free to share any anecdotes or discussions, and promote posts or creators related to these events in the comments below! We'll see you soon on the 10th to celebrate Indigenous People's Day! π
