I've known that Aphantasia was a thing for a while now. I saw a documentary on it years ago. Basically, Aphantasia means you aren't able to produce mental images. You might "know" what something looks or sounds like, but you can't actually bring it up as a mental picture.
I've only recently become aware that Hyperphantasia is a thing, though. It's the exact opposite of Aphantasia where you can perfectly create a mental image that's as real (or at least very close to it) as actually experiencing a thing. Most people fall in the middle of the two being able to mentally recall things, but there are a lot of details missing that makes it something more like a clay model or some other non-perfect recreation.
You can think of it this way. Aphantasia would be writing down a descriptive paragraph of an object or scene using only words in a notebook. The typical person (neither Aphantasia nor Hyperphantasia) would doodle the same scene as a picture in a notebook during class or work. A person with Hyperphantasia would be like an artists recreation of a scene in full color and detail that took many hours to complete.
I have only recently become aware that I experience hyperphantasia. I had always thought that people were either like me or they were aphantasic. I didn't know there was a middle ground where most people stand.
I imagine that erotic audio would not work for, or would at least be incredibly challenging for somebody with aphantasia. There is no medically accepted tests to show aphantasia or hyperphantasia, but there is a generally accepted questionnaire called the VVIQ that you can take to give you a somewhat rough idea of where you might fall. One such questionnaire can be found here if you'd like to give it a try. Low scores might indicate Aphantasia where high scores might indicate Hyperphantasia. I also found an extremely good and simple check list here on Reddit.
The Reddit questionnaire is broken in to five sections, each corresponding to one of the classical senses. You might be more or less "phantasic" (if that's a word) in each section. Apparently, visual hyperphantasia is more common than the others and smell and taste are usually the rarer ones to have. I would say I'm extremely visual and audio hyperphantasic (almost near perfect visualization), rather highly touch hyperphantasic, and smell and taste would be higher than typical, but not as sharp as the others with smell being particularly "fuzzy" for me which is funny because I also have a medical condition called Hyperosmia where my sense of smell is amplified. Funny story about that and how I came to acquire this terrible superpower. I'll tell it if you're interested, but it's off topic so I won't go into it here.
I bring all of this up because after learning about hyperphantasia I've suddenly become aware of some of the things I've said in response to audios in the past. I've commented often about the performer being able to transport me to the world they've created in their audio and now I realize that this might not be something most people are able to do.
I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that the majority of GoneWild users tend more towards the hyperphantasic side of the spectrum just given the very nature of erotic audio. I'm curious about your experience with this and how you feel you fall into the spectrum of hyperphantasia or do you consider yourself typical? Are there any Aphantasic listeners out there? If so, how does erotic audio work for you?
