I just spent this last weekend moving out of my apartment in the city which I've spent my entire adult life. Four years of university and two years continuing to work for that university as a Lab Tech. I'm going to be moving to another state to start my PhD in microbiology and I'm so incredibly excited to start that, BUT I really, really loved that city. I was so incredibly lucky to have had such amazing experiences over the last six years and I'm just going to miss the town that was so good to me. So for that reason, I'm coming at you all with a collection of bittersweet songs for the bittersweet moments in your lives.
Built to Spill was part of my first endeavor into the realm of indie music and I definitely came away from their album There's Nothing Wrong with Love with a far greater appreciation of the music of the 90s that I missed growing up. This song is just about fond memories of a short fling, sad it's over, but enjoying the memory.
Major Spoilers for The Land Beyond the Pines are in this video, but it's been out for like five years now, so if you haven't seen it yet, that's kind of your own fault. The Lyrics of this song don't actually make a lot of sense to me, but it plays at the end of The Land Beyond the Pines and just gives this fantastic bittersweet melody to resolve the film. If you haven't watched it yet, go watch it now. It's on Netflix.
"The Wolves (Act I and II)" - Bon Iver
I remember listening to this song in the car on my way to University for the very first time. It was the end of my childhood, and the beginning of the era that I just ended. Seems fitting to bring it up at another bittersweet transition period for me. Though I guess it was less bittersweet that time. I hated high school.
"A Movie Script Ending" - Death Cab for Cutie
My mandatory Philly inclusion of the week, The Wonder Years is actually one of the biggest bands to come out of Philly in the last decade. Coffee Eyes describes some of the most awful shit that Dan "Soupy" Campbell and his gang has experienced through the years and the diner that always held them together like a social and emotional anchor.
"Coffee Eyes" - The Wonder Years
This song almost defines bittersweet. Longing so badly to be alone with the one you love. The melody and vocals are just so haunting in combination.
"To Be Alone With You" - Sufjan Stevens
I think this song is about a loved one passing away. Probably more bitter than sweet, but even when you miss someone they can still bring you joy in your memories of them.
"3 Rounds and a Sound" - Blind Pilot
David Bazan is still probably the most bitter man making music. Especially in 2004. Basically just saying, I love you a lot, but it's nice to have the option to divorce you. Definitely more bitter than sweet.
"That song you sent me feels like Saturdays" I don't really know what this next song means other that line. I really don't know what else to say about this song. I just love it a lot. It just reeks of this kind of bittersweet sadness.
"Soaked in Sleep" - Sioux Falls
La Dispute is probably one of my absolute favorite bands. Mostly because of how cinematic their albums are. They tell these long grand stories, often containing stories within the stories. This particular song is the last song on their most recent album Rooms of the House. This album tells the fictional story of a couple and the trials and tribulations of their relationship as they grow older and eventually divorce. This song serves as a capstone to the album. Both a spring cleaning and a meditation on the past for his marriage.
