Hello Backstage,
I'm afraid today is A Bad Day.
In 1991 innocent little 14-year-old DG had a hole kicked through his brain by the release of a record by a band from Seattle. To be honest, it wasn't the first time this happened, nor would it be the last, but this one came with a voice that made my mouth drop open and yell along, in a vain and failed hope I could compare.
After badmotorfinger came a defining album for me. Floppy-haired 17-year-old DG had not escaped the "yelling along" phase and never ever would. I can still recite the entirety of Superunknown, word for word, at increasing volume and intensity, to this day. The words are etched.
And then onwards, from Soundgarden to Audioslave to solo work... hearing that voice always caused me to stop and listen. Mouth open.
Today the voice has fallen quiet.
So, to channel the shock and sadness, I had to do the thing that comes most natural.
No sorrow or pity for leaving, I feel; I am not your rolling wheels...
Rest In Peace and Thank You, Chris Cornell.
