Mixtape Monday! April 3, 2017
Post Body

It is only just now becoming Monday for me, but it's been Monday for more than half a day for some of our eastern hemisphere people, so I figured I would get this up as early as I could.

Since it seemed like a decent amount of people were interested in doing this, I figured we might as well keep on doing it. I think I might try to come up with themes in the future, so if you have any ideas please PM me or comment. Sorry, I was too lazy to make a spotify playlist, but also a lot of this stuff isn't on spotify at this moment in time.

"All We Got" - Chance the Rapper

This is possibly the most wholesome song I've ever heard. There's something about this song that always makes me feel happy. I don't even particularly like happy songs, but the sheer amount of passion in this song is incredibly uplifting.

"Constant Headache" - Joyce Manor

This is Joyce Manor's most popular song and for good reason. It's pretty fucking catchy and the song drives it's lyrics home pretty hard if you don't mind Barry Johnson's almost monotone voice. I don't think any song I've listened to quite accurately captures the emptiness one can feel when you've accomplished something and accomplishing that thing brings you no happiness.

"The Trash Particle" - Modern Baseball (bonus live acoustic version)

Modern Baseball doesn't write songs; they tell stories. This is the story of loving someone who doesn't care about you and the pain it can bring. When I first heard this song, I felt as though my heart had been ripped out. At their best, that's what Modern Baseball does. They beautifully capture the emotions they feel and project them onto the listener through their stories.

"Jenkintown-Wyncote" - Harmony Woods

If you like Modern Baseball, you will love this girl. Harmony Woods is the project of the up and coming Philly musician Sofia Verbilla. Her upcoming album Nothing Special was produced by Jake Ewald of Modern Baseball and this song in particular has Brendan Lukens (also of Modern Baseball) on the lead guitar. And while their influence is certainly felt, Verbilla puts her own spin on the material with her beautiful voice and vivid images (But then I walk a few blocks and I knock on your door/And I'm reminded/Why I paid 7 bucks to meet you hear at midday/It's 'cause your smile quite frankly actually reminds me/That things might be okay)

"Disappeared" - Sorority Noise

Suicide touches a lot of people. If you've ever had a close friend or family member that took their own life, you know that it can be a world-shattering experience. This song deals explicitly with Cameron Boucher's own experience with suicide. His friends that have passed away, his difficulties dealing with it, and his own suicidal ideations.

"The Embers" - Vagabon

Lætitia Tamko is Vagabon. And she is currently in the process of flipping indie rock and emo music on their respective heads. I would never say she is the best vocalist in the world, she's not an opera singer, but I'll be damned if you tell me she doesn't put every last drop of herself into these songs. Interestingly enough this is another song about the anxiety on public transport.

"Soaked in Sleep" - Sioux Falls

Sioux falls has recently become one of my favorite groups. Which is really unfortunate because they disbanded about 4 months before I discovered them, which made me really sad. Their 2016 album Rot Forever became an instant classic in my mind fusing 90's indie, emo and punk into this waking daydream that morphs and folds into itself over and over again. This song captures that fusion exceptionally well.

"Awaking Daydream" - Chinese Football

It's not just our technology that the Chinese are reverse engineering. They've started to reverse engineer our emo music too! All jokes aside Chinese Football from Wuhan, China is taking a style first pioneered by American Football in '99 and refining it. I would go so far as to say they made a better follow up to American Football's first album than American Football did.
