... that every actor wants to play Hamlet. Of course, the name for a less than excellent actor is also a 'ham' - from the number of times that same Prince of Denmark has been played badly. And, I suppose, it's not really surprising. There are lots of great lines to totally mess up in Hamlet. Lines easy to deliver, but hard to deliver well. Maybe not the hardest - I think that honour falls to King Lear. Lear's five 'never's' are a tough gig if you're not just going to sound repetitive. But Lear could never be Hamlet (heh - see what I did there? Sorry, William (blush)).
I know. I'm blethering. But that's how it is, sometimes.
Sometimes, when the night is just that little bit too dark, when the only sound is one more Simon and Garfunkel than William of the Shaking Spear - sometimes, the silence comes too close. Sometimes, just sometimes, it ceases to be the friend it has been and becomes a glass to be shattered, a wall to be breached.
And sometimes, even when you want to try, sometimes the glass won't break. The wall won't fall. And those times, really, there's not much left. Because sometimes, just like Hamlet says - the rest? It's still silence.
Oh, it's OK. I'm not going anywhere :-). And there's no need to call 911 - I'm OK. But it's a dark night, and a quiet one. So quiet, I had to hammer my keys, to set Denmark's Prince liar. So quiet that, for once, I thought to set the tattered one aside, and, in the words I can see off to my right, let you know a little of what I do when I'm not being - well, not Tatters. But this isn't the place for that.
So I'll leave it just this. I haven't been here long - but I loves you all, so I does. And I thanks you for letting this poor scribbler scribble - I thanks you, and then I'll take my bow, for tonight at least. For the rest - is best left silent.
