I've been learning Greek for 2 weeks now, I plan on moving to Greece in a few years once I graduate college.
However, there is this nagging voice in the back of my head telling me that learning Greek is pointless because most people there speak Greek & English.
I would just hate to put in years of time & effort to learn Greek, just to get there & have my Greek not be clear & fluent so all the locals just speak to me in English.
I know a lot of countries make an effort to teach their children other languages in school & I know English is a popular language most countries impose on their children to learn in school. Unlike in the US, we do have different language classes but, most people in America speak english & only english.
Like I could imagine someone having a very hard time managing in America not speaking english. Like, I've heard of people moving here & not speaking English, but typically when I hear of them, it's usually someone who is very reclusive & only stays in small communities of people that are from their country & speak their language. & that's not the experience I want in Greece, I want to embrace the people and the culture, and it would keep me motivated to know I HAVE to learn Greek in order to do that because most people their don't speak english.
