Hey,
My friend's dog ate around 40mg of Bromethalin (calculated from wt % of rat poison) last Sat. This nice Merck Manual page on Bromethalin poisoning seems to say it's a sub-lethal dose and that it has a half life of around 6 days so he should start coming out on top with a slow recovery soon. The dog is super lethargic, which that manual seems to suggest as normal for a sublethal dose, so although he's still passing fluids/stool, it's hard to get him to drink by his own volition. Also, it's already past the point where any clinical intervention short of fluids is recommended.
I figure if he could get some IV fluids, it'd help him pass the toxins/metabolites sooner and make sure he doesn't die of dehydration in the meantime. My friend called a vet at Shores, and they wanted between 500-1500$ for a simple IV infusion. I'm pretty sure ketamine infusions are cheaper, although they don't take dogs. Petsmart and TSC wanted a prescription.
With all that being said, anyone know a cheap vet for dog IV's? Or maybe a cheap place to buy them?
