Hello I have a 98 gmc k1500 sle z71. I’m running 35x12.50 tires and no lift. It’s got a bone stock 5.7 vortec. I’m looking to make it just a little bit quicker and I want it to sound good. I was looking at a mpfi injector conversion, struggling to find input on what one to get. And I’m looking at a cam with supporting valve train mods for that classic chop at idle. Wondering what I should do in terms of what I need to approach maybe the 350-400 horse range if possible on stock internals, do I need a tune? Do I need bigger injectors or the regular mpfi ones? And will my transmission handle it? (fresh 4l60e) any input is appreciated
If you want a chop at idle, youll need to upgrade your camshaft, depending on how aggressive you go with that, you may need some valvetrain updates too. A cam upgrade will drop ypur low end power, but will allow more up top. A cam wont make all that much more HP unless you are ysing forced induction or hugger compression. Get or make yourself a nice sounding exhaust too, it will net you a little extra power, maybe 10 or so.
If you wanna make it to 400 HP, youll end up doing internal motor work or forced induction, because you wont make that much off of just bolt ons.
A turbo kit would probably be the cheapest way to make that kinda power, BUT that might effect your reliability, not really sure how much power is safe on the 5.7 Vortec. You may also need a hugger flow fuel pump to push that much power
