Tailgate compartment not waterproof.... Any known fix?

I thought it was great that they used the space in the tailgate for a small cargo compartment. But holy crap, it leaks water! Are you kidding me?! Would have been a great place to store ratchet straps, etc, but they are in constant moisture and everything rusts. Has anyone cracked the code on how to keep this compartment dry?
