Issue : observing higher and higher RPMs at low speed

Noticing that my G goes up to 3-4k rpm even at lower speeds like 20-30 mph with minimal acceleration.
Also got a faint oil/fuel smell for the first time today.
Can someone please help me out? I want to diagnose the issue before taking it to the shop and rack up a bill.
