Union trades. Short of that - trades. Electrician - commercial - NOT residential - commercial is an excellent good paying job. Any kind of job where you’re paid for knowledge and experience over just physical capabilities will always be your best bet. The trades offer a kind of combination of both and I specifically mentioned electrician, not just because I am one but because I started out as a carpenter. Electrician is much better. I’m 57 years old now I could never do the work I used to do when I was a union carpenter, doing heavy duty, industrial construction. I live in the Pacific Northwest (Vancouver, WA) and I’ve been doing this for about 27 years. I am a licensed low-voltage electrician and a member of the IBEW and I make $50 an hour plus benefits. And? My highest grade of completion is the ninth grade. Literally didn’t get past 10th grade. Why? Didn’t give a fuck. The best part about getting into a trade apprenticeship is also the fact you have no student debt. And in the union it’s free. Outside of the union you’ll have to pay your way but it’s not much and you’ll be making a lot of money quickly. In the IBEW you start off at 50% of journeyman wage and get a 10% raise every six months until you top out. Our contract runs out at the end of the year and I will likely be getting a raise next year. Over the last eight years my wages have increased about $17 per hour. Union trades are where it’s at. And it’s not like the propaganda from the right wing makes you think it might be. I work for a private company. If I don’t do my job they’ll get rid of me. You don’t get to lay around for $50 an hour. You get to produce. It’s a damn good career. Good luck man.
