Applying for Brand Registry without GS1?

I setup my product listing before the new GS1 UPC requirements came down. Now to help protect myself against hijackers I want to apply for brand registry. Is this even possible without a GS1 code? Could this get me in trouble or listing banned?
If not is it possible to change my UPC code on existing listing? My product has only amazon barcodes on it. I can suck it up and buy the GS1 barcodes. Will this mess up my listing?
Thanks guys! Interested to here the Amazon announcement tomorrow.
