As a teenager I worked in a full service gas station / tire shop in New Mexico. We were the 1st station coming into town from a horse racing and ski resort area and most of our customers were from Texas going back and forth. One summer during horse racing season, I had been running the station by myself, between changing tires and running the pumps for 10 hours, I knew I was “ripe” but the steady stream of customers I couldn’t take a break. The owner came in to help with all the traffic and give me a break. Just before leaving, I take a caddy that pulled in. the caddy is sitting almost sideways, the driver stumbles out of the car, says to fill it up. Dude very drunk, very rude to his wife, just an ass. They go to the restroom and he comes back into the office and mumbling about how everyone was ripping him off, how the races were fixed, etc, etc,. I tell him the cost of the fill up was, he screams at me for pouring gas on the ground , that there is no way it was that much, he stumbles out to look for spilled gas which there was none. He comes back in, throws his gas card at me and continues to act like a ass. My boss was stepping out of his office to deal with this guy when the dude throws2 quarters at me “ to take a shower sometimes” I look at my boss, he just raises his hands, says “do what you gotta do”. I was stepping up to deal with him, when his wife busts into the office, actually grabbing him by the collar and dragging him out to the car. She comes back apologizing profusely saying he had lost a ton of money at the track and was drunk.
They left with him driving, my boss made 2 phone calls. First to his BIL who was a state police officer, then to the gas card hotline reporting their card as fraudulent. BIL told us later he had been pulled over and arrested just outside of town by the local P D, spent 2 weeks in jail as he had no bail. They released his wife with no charges.
