I’m moving into a house and there is a massive backyard. I didn’t pay too much attention to the lighting situation but I know there’s only two main large trees bc thats where I was going to setup my dog’s wire run.
My question is this - I want to start growing the vegetables I like but is it even frugal or worthwhile if I’m not sure if I’ll be here longer than a year? I could also just take this up as a hobby cause I wanna get outside more anyways, but I don’t wanna go outta my way to build a garden for a year or two if it’s pointless.
The idea was to move in here because I’m paying the same as I was in an apartment and now I’ll have a yard for my husky mix who really needs one, and be closer to family and doctors and work, therefore cutting my driving and car costs a LOT. I planned on staying here until I pay off my car and I’m not sure how long that will be. This could all change of course.
I work from home three days a week so I’m home about 5 days out of the week, plenty of time to work on things throughout the day.
I am NOT handy, but my stepdad and half bro are and could probably convince them to help me build raised beds.
The issue is- doesn’t it take years to yield?
What could I grow, that would actually produce anything? Would I need to start ASAP?
I’m pretty picky with veggies but trying to learn ways to love them, but I mostly eat broccoli, squashes, green beans, potatoes, onions, tomatoes (only can stand them roasted), bell peppers, cabbage, pickled radishes, and Brussels sprouts. I WANT to like mushrooms so badly but they just taste so slimy almost everywhere I tried them. Once at a fancy steak place I had some that literally tasted just like steak, but I can’t recall the type of mushroom it was so long ago. Surely there is some way to like them? 😂
Anyways if you have suggestions I’m all ears!
Oh and for weather relevancy, I’m in Lilburn, GA (suburb east of Atlanta)
TIA!
