âForlkets kĂ€rlek, min belöningâ [The peoples love, (is) my reward.]
- Karl XIV Johans motto
After 25 years on the throne the once military general of Napoleonic France had become defined as âa commoner whose every inch and manner radiated royal eleganceâ, it was no question that the man was indeed a monarch. He had done much for Sweden and its people, from stabilizing its economy to enacting many reforms. And the 80-year-old king was not shy on acting out some lasting reforms in his old age and sought to improve the situation within his kingdom, protecting its trade and expanding its industrial potential.
Fabriks- och hantverksförordningen was enacted, this meant that skrÄvÀsendet (monopoly corporations with explicit licenses to cities, church or national leaders) was abolished. This then meant that artisans freely could settle down wherever in the countryside. Sweden was to see a complete freedom of trade for its citizens, where almost anyone was free to work with what they wanted, wherever they wanted. This opened the door for industries to expand into the countryside where much of its natural resources lay, breaking the old bonds to the cities monopoly on industry.
Some previous regulations for bergsbruket was changed and abolished, allowing the the mining industry to better expand its industry.
These reforms would be enacted over both Sweden and Finland considering that Norway would have to enact such a reform on their own accord. These reforms that king Karl enacted were meant to provide Sweden with a last series of important reforms to improve the position of the nation whilst also preserving the social structure.
