Sweden-Norway, a country at peace surrounded by uprising and war. How could it ever expect to be able to defend itself when it became clear that other nations were asking themselves for war, how could she know if her guns were enough?
The parliament in Stockholm confirmed with this topic on everyone's lips. The army had been a topic now and then since the conquest of Norway, mostly amongst military men, but now also amongst those in office. The idea of a central defence and a defence in depth as was planned for the sparsely populated Sweden had left much to be desired. The army equipment was growing old, and if it was to defend itself it had to update it's arsenal, and it had to do so cheap.
The king suspected something strange in how the proposition was presented, Swedish arms were not entirely outdated not was there a pressing need to improve them. He did not question however the more eager officers and nobles calling for an improvement in the Central Defence plans. The king only made a note in his diary of how suspicious it was that this occurred at the same time as Hesse urged Sweden to war, ending the entry by saying "... I believe it might be a coincidence from the part of Hesse, but my suspicion lies with some members of parliament still."
An envoy was sent to Prussia to purchase rifles to arm one regement in Sweden. It was not near enough of what was desired but it was what the kingdom willingly could commission. The polish question had proved the prussian rifles sufficient when fighting against a more numerous foe, some reached their ears through propaganda, some through rumours and then one official source. It somewhat conflicted the disaster seen in Belgium
