The Farrapos Revolt in the southern Province of Rio Grande do Sul continues, the flags of Liberalism have been put forward; it seems that the Farroupilhas, which is the name given by the Imperial forces to the rebels that reside in Rio Grande do Sul, have been gaining traction and have proclaimed their support, time and time again, for the abolition of the Brazilian monarchy – but it seems that the current revolt has been gaining more support as a separatist movement that calls for the formation of a new liberal and democratic republic where the current Province of Rio Grande do Sul resides, called the ‘República Riograndense’ or the Rio Grande Republic.

Furthermore, there have been reports that the leader of the revolution, Bento Gonçalves da Silva, has pleaded other provinces of the Empire to revolt, including the Province of Bahia, a large slave province that has recently been receiving unrest due to the influences of the Farroupilha Revolt. Francisco Sabino, a medical doctor and recent political leader, has been sparking up tensions in the region after asking the Imperial Government for an increase in the autonomy of the province.

Political leader Bernardo Pereira de Vasconcelos has vehemently condemned both the Farrapos Revolt and the unrest in Bahia; according to him, “there is a clear lack of respect with the Imperial crown and with the Empire itself – these rebels need to be put to the sword before long, this injustice won’t stand”. He was greeted with support among the Regressist Party – a reactionary party in the Empire of Brazil that is favorable to the Emperor and to the centralization of power with the State, along with having conservative views on slavery, looking to preserve it. On the other side, the national regent, Feijó, leader of the Moderate Liberal Party and being elected to the position of regent 12th of October of 1835, has proclaimed a policy of negotiation with Francisco Sabino and Bento Gonçalves both; claiming that there is room for establishing new laws regarding the autonomy of these provinces, this comment received brutal backlash from the Regressist Party.
